Getting Started Shopping List
This is an idea of what is needed for a basic cage for a ferret. I have included grooming needs and a carry case but not harnesses or toys for outside the cage, or a run. I have also not included food since this decision is very individual. Options for feeding can be found HERE. This would be the bare minimum that you would need, there are a lot more possibilities for toys and beds/hammocks but hopefully this will give you an idea of what works and the initial costs included in getting a ferret
-
Indoors cage OR outdoors hutch with these hutches you must add extra catches as they can shake them open. Hutches with sliding trays need these secured too as ferrets can push them open, and open floored hutches and runs need to be on a solid floor or have mesh underneath as ferrets can dig out. watch bar spacing on all hutches/cages/runs, some small ferrets can squeeze out of average sized chicken wire
more information on what housing is suitable click HERE
you can also get ladder/shelf covers for indoor cages from here but they are made to order
-
toys such as tubes, cat balls, interactive toys
-
bowl x2 if feeding kibble and raw. The water bowl beneath is also suitable for ferret food, or any other solid ceramic bowl for cats, dogs or rabbits
AND
-
small animal bedding OR another substrate, or fleece liners
AND
-
A tray. The tray we prefer is the most basic straight edged one from Poundland, by getting 2 and fixing one to the floor of the cage/hutch you can put the other inside and it cannot be tipped
Information on grooming can be found HERE but you would need;
-
salmon oil or a ferret oil, we do sell our own mix Gold Oil
-
cat shampoo (just in case)
Again this is a basic minimum. It is also best to find a ferret suitable vet, more HERE, before bringing your pet home.
