Lost and Found Ferret Advice

Everyone with ferrets has to deal with this at one point or another, whether someones opened the cage or they've managed to get the locks open I hope this can help you get your ferret back home and safe ASAP.  If you have Found a ferret please follow the check lists as well but In the order 1, 3, 2, 4, and 6 if seen repeatedly.  Please note due to certain individuals claiming any ferret found as their own please do not post details or pictures of the found ferret on social media which they can cold read a description from

  1. Call the local SPCA (SSPCA in Scotland 03000 999 999) and report them missing When most people find a missing ferret they either call the SSPCA or take them to the local vet, the SSPCA has an online list all vets have access to for lost pets but I like to check with the vets aswell anyway, and in your area they may not have this widespread list

  2. Call local vets/animal businesses and ask them to call you if they see/hear anything  As above it's good to check with vets but your local pet shop can be a big help too.  The pet community all have a link to the pet shop, they'll hear if someones chickens are suddenly acting strange or if someone nearby has found a strange little creature in their garden that seems a bit too tame to be wild

  3. Put out a carrier with their/your bedding and a little food, check regularly for any signs of your ferret being there  9/10 if you do this you'll come out to your ferret fast asleep and wondering what the big fuss is about sooner or later.  They know where their bread is buttered and will come looking for a warm bed or dinner sooner or later

  4. Put a missing post up on Facebook/Twitter and knock on doors near you.  If you don’t have social media contact us and we will be happy to help  As with no.2 the pet community is the most likely place help will come from except the SSPCA.  We as owners want to get them home safe and empathize so much because we've all been there.  Use the viral nature of the internet to your advantage and let everyone in the world know that your pet is loved and wanted home.

  5. Wait

  6. If your ferret’s location is known but you cannot catch him call the SPCA again and ask for a lone of a humane cat trap/mink trap  I used to have one of these and was convinced to get rid of it.  Within a few months I needed it.  The SSPCA are really helpful but these cat traps are in short supply so they might want you to be certain before lending you one.  The last time I had to use one of these the ferret had been on the lamb a week and we caught him in one of these within a few hours.  All you need is some tasty food and a towel over the top
